We're looking for someone who has, or is about to complete, an undergraduate degree in built environment related subject, including Civil/Structural Engineering, Architecture or Architectural Engineering. You will analyse drawings and models of buildings to estimate the quality of materials stocked within them and their potential for secondary reuse. You will also derive material quantities from typical construction specifications and products. The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of buildings, and be comfortable analysing plans, sections, and elevations. You will also have experience of embodied carbon calculations and a good working knowledge of Excel. The ability to code in python is beneficial.
Main duties and Responsibilities:
Quantifying typical ranges for the material intensity, embodied carbon and reuse potential of different building projects and typical construction specifications across builing layers - with a particular focus on the skin, service and fit-out.
Analysing existing building drawings to estimate material intensities.
Working with the wider research team to scale building-level material quantities, embodied carbon and reuse potentials to the neighbourhood, city and national level, knowledge of python coding would be beneficial.
Visualising results to clearly communicate findings to different stakeholders, this will include Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Working with the wider research team in preparing research papers for journal publication and associated conference papers/presentations.
Planning a research schedule to ensure personal milestones within the project are met.
Work in close collaboration with other member of the BuildZero project team, including effective engagement with industrial, commercial and public project stakeholders.
Participate in, and present progress reports at a variety of BuildZero related team meetings and events.
